On May 29, Malik’s mother Robin Jackson attended the Birmingham Community Charter High School Senior Awards Ceremony to announce the 2019 recipients of the 2019 Nahla’s Gifts scholarships. Four seniors were awarded the from a highly competitive pool of applicants that included students with diverse academic and extracurricular accomplishments. Many of the applicants spoke to circumstances such as being first-generation college attendees, immigration, and other challenging situation that may have hindered their academic progress should it have not been for their perseverance and support they received from their school, families, and community. Each winner will each receive a $2,500 scholarship to support their post-secondary education.
Although Malik was unable to attend the event himself as he is away at training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles, he wrote a statement that his mother read on his behalf, congratulating the 2019 graduating class and award recipients.
First off I want to congratulate the 2019 graduating class of my alma mater. This school was crucial in molding me into the man I am today and the athlete I have become.
Secondly, congratulations to the 2019 recipients of Nahla’s Gifts scholarship. This scholarship was named after my daughter so as she grows she feels the positive impact education has and the opportunities it gives you.
Reviewing the applications, it was very evident Birmingham is filled with engaged, caring, and dedicated students which is a testament to the teachers and staff and families in this incredible community.
They say it takes a village to raise a kid and with the Malik’s Gifts foundation I am very happy to be a part of a place that has given me so much.
Again, congrats to the class of 2019. Now go out there, do great things, and don’t forget to give back!
